In December 1944, a crashed B-29 Superfortress was hauled to a military research institute outside Tokyo. Japan's best engineers — metallurgists, electrical specialists, instrument technicians — were ordered to take it apart, examine every component, and write a report. They had done this before with captured B-17s. They expected to find a bigger, tougher version of the same technology. What they found was something else entirely. It started with a single piece of aluminum skin. Then the wiring. Then five identical steel boxes bolted behind the gun turrets. Each discovery was worse than the last. Each one quieter. By the time the engineers finished, they weren't writing about an airplane anymore. They were writing about why the war was already over — and why nothing Japan could build would change that.
