(25 Mar 2007) HEADLINE: Conjoined twins get ready for separation surgery ---------------------------------------- CAPTION: Three-year-old conjoined twins Anastasia and Tatiana Dogaru were born in Romania connected at the head. They are set to begin the process toward separation this spring in the U.S. (March 25) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Like many 3 year old sisters Anastasia and Tatianna Dogaru alternate between playing and arguing... (SOT) "Anastasia, she is the bossy one, she's very bright smart, but she's very active always has the initiative to do good and bad stuff..." "Tatianna is the patient one, the most patient in the world I ever saw, she never complains, always does what her sister wants..." (vo) And Tatiana doesn't have much choice, conjoined at the head the two sisters obviously do just about everything together.. But soon that might change.. (sot) Without separation these girls won't make it.. (vo) Dr kenneth salyer heads the world craniofacial foundation.. The foundation is underwriting most of the costs for Tatiana and Anastasia and recently supported the successful separation of the ibrahim twins seen here meeting Tatiana and Anastasia shortly after the girls arrived in the U.S. two and a half years ago.. According to salyer the girls must be separated to have any shot at long-term survival, still the facts are their chances of a successful separation are only about ten percent.. (sot) we're forced to separate now is the time..." "our success rate is going up like this, and going up because of improved modeling improved techniques and support.." (vo) Next month the girls travel to Ohio where doctors will begin the final steps of preparation before several surgeries to separate, the girls mother Claudia is cautiously optimistic.. (SOT) Two years and a half my hopes went up and down up and down we've had so many tests, so many problems I can't wait to start... (vo) Through it all Claudia is looking forward to one special time, that now could be just months away.. (sot) I can't wait for the moment they can see each other (vo) After the surgeries are complete the family will have to stay in the U.S. for at least another two or three years while the girls recover, and learn how to live as individuals..
