Utashinai City in Hokkaido is famous for being the least populated city in Japan. While it's often associated with negative information like "ghost town," "on the verge of extinction," and "nobody's there," a stroll through the city reveals it to be a wonderful place with plenty to see! At its peak, when it flourished as a coal mining town, its population was 46,000, but now it's dwindled to less than 2,500, making it undeniably quiet. However, they've embraced the advantages of their small population, even using it as a selling point! Within this compact area, there's a wealth of sights to see, including former coal mine sites, mine entrances and tunnels, abandoned schools, and remnants of coal mining facilities.
