Minami Bibai was once a city of 20,000 people that thrived on the Mitsui Bibai coal mine and was also home to the Japanese National Railways. Even in the Reiwa era, it retains the atmosphere of a coal mining town, as if time has stood still. The former site of the largest movie theater in Hokkaido, where new movies were released earlier than in Sapporo, the mouth of a railway import tunnel gaping in the mountains, and the mysterious remains of a waterside structure (?) that were suddenly discovered - Minami Bibai is full of things to see.
