Fishing, Swimming: What We Learn At A Taiwan Village School By The Sea | Never Out Of Reach 2

Far from Taiwan’s cities, in the country’s northernmost cape, the 102-year-old Bitou Elementary School sits on a cliff facing the East China Sea. This picturesque little school serves the residents of the nearby fishing village and has only 20 students. Knowing that Bitou and its marine culture have been closely linked for several decades, the school is now using the local environment as part of their education curriculum. Elementary students like En En, Si Si and Ta Tung are not just getting an education in the classroom. They go out to the piers to meet the fishermen who are the backbone of the local economy. And they are taught the importance of marine sustainability and environmental protection by taking part in kayaking and snorkelling classes. All with the hope that these same students can eventually be the future of Bitou.
