Suffolk & Cambridgeshire Family Tree Trip, Day 2,'St Mary's Mildenhall, Part I, by Sheila, June 3rd
Another church visited 20 years ago while pursuing my family tree research. Now also linked to Isleham and other nearby towns and villages to the Brook and Brown names and other associated names via marriages. An impressive majestic church with a commanding tower seen for miles.Another place steeped in medieval history and further back in time. The church is well maintained and education and information about its history a priority with numerous features, displays placards, memorials and effgies with a focus on children and learning.History oozes from its walls, its magnificent architechture and ornate art work like the huge wooden angels within the roof beams, the stain glass windows and so much more that a visit can enhance. And outside in the graveyard many old graves still visible but also unreadible but standing in memory of those who once walked and breathed here.Plenty of material for me to digest and assess alongside my family tree data.It all takes time to allocate information to the individual profiles and their place in Time and Space, to verifiy and then share.Part II to follow. I also wandered around the town centre and entered a store for some groceries admiring the medieval feel on display and of course imagining the ancestors many moons ago walking here, shopping here etc...The preservation of the town assists in its uniquiness. My family tree database houses the relationships once forged here long ago, the parish records certainly a treasure trove of births, marriages and burials and other records of its early history.
