Metro S – známe všechny podrobnosti!
The largest transport project in preparation in Prague, which will affect not only the lives of the capital's residents, but also their neighbors from the Central Bohemian Region. This is what the New Connection II project, nicknamed Metro S, could be called. And that is exactly what we focused on in this video. Although Metro S is, to put it simply, suburban train transport, it will be completely unique – a large part of the line will run underground, thanks to which trains will reach the very center of Prague. Why is it needed? Are you thinking that suburban trains already run today, so there is no need to invent underground lines? The problem with the current connection, however, is that the tracks are not enough in terms of capacity. Long-distance and freight trains also run on them, which, combined with the increasing number of people commuting to Prague, means that the carriages are overcrowded and will soon cease to meet demand. To prevent people from exchanging trains for cars, the lines need to be strengthened. A plan was thus created to put the tracks in underground tunnels, which will make the journey to Prague easier and, most importantly, faster. Moving around the metropolis itself will also be easier. So what should the S metro look like? From west to east The west-east tunnel should lead from Smíchov Station to Karlín, where it will connect to the Karlín line at Čechie. It is to have 4 stations – Karlovo náměstí (with a transfer to metro B), Václavské náměstí (transfers to A and B), the central station under Hlavní nádraží (it should be 40 meters deep) and Karlín (at the level of the Křižíkova station with a transfer to B). From north to south The north-south tunnel will start behind Vršovice and will end at Florenc by the Negrelli viaduct. Only two stations are planned – the central one under Hlavní nádraží and Florenc (it will be above ground in the place where the bus station is today). Follow-up projects The metro S will be followed by other projects planned in Prague. These include: • the high-speed train to the airport – it was originally planned to end at Masaryk Station, but now it is planned that some trains will end at Hlavní nádraží; • the transformation of Hlavní nádraží – due to the metro S, another vestibule is planned to be built on Winstona Churchilla Square; • metro D – in the second phase of construction, a line will be built from Pankrác to Nádraží Bratří Synků Square, where it will connect with the metro S; • a tram line in front of Hlavní nádraží; • roofing of the tracks and other projects planned by Penta. When and for how much Currently, the project of the New Connection II is being considered and it is estimated that everything should be ready for construction in 2035. In that case, it could be completed in 2047. The budget is currently set at 185 billion crowns, but it can be assumed that it will increase. Most of the funds will be provided by the state, but the EU contribution and the involvement of private capital in the form of a PPP project are also expected.
