The Status of Prophet Ibrahim, Peace Be Upon Him, in Islam Prophet Ibrahim Pbuh holds a great position in Islam. He is the father of the prophets, the leader of the believers in monotheism, and the close friend of Allah (Khalilullah). We do not see Ibrahim pbuh merely as a historical figure or ancestor, but as a model of faith, patience, sacrifice, and complete submission to Allah. The Qur’an explains that Muslims are the people closest to Ibrahim pbuh because they follow the same message of pure monotheism that he preached. Allah says in surah Aal Imraan: “Ibrahim was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allah], and he was not among the polytheists. Indeed, the people who have the best claim to Ibrahim are those who followed him, and this Prophet, and those who believe.” These verses show clearly that Ibrahim pbuh followed neither corrupted beliefs nor false religions. Rather, he worshipped Allah alone with sincerity and complete submission. Therefore, the followers of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are the closest people to Ibrahim pbuh because they continue the same message of tawheed. Allah also describes Ibrahim pbuh by saying in surah Al-Nahl: “Indeed, Ibrahim was a nation in himself, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth.” He was called “a nation” because he possessed many qualities of goodness and stood alone against a whole society immersed in idol worship and disbelief. Despite opposition and hardship, he remained firm upon the truth. Another important connection between Muslims and Ibrahim is the verse in Surah Al-Hajj which states: “He named you Muslims before.” The honourable name “Muslims” is connected to Ibrahim pbuh and his call to submit fully to Allah alone. One of the greatest signs of Ibrahim’s status is the many difficult tests he endured. Allah tested him with severe trials, and he fulfilled every command with patience, faith, and obedience. Among his greatest trials was his struggle against idol worship. He called his people to worship Allah alone and broke the idols they worshipped. In response, his people threw him into a huge fire, but Allah protected him and made the fire cool and peaceful for him. Ibrahim pbuh was also tested by remaining without children for many years until Allah granted him Ismail (Ishmael) in his old age. Then Allah commanded him to leave Ismail and his mother Hajar in a barren valley near the Sacred House in Makkah. Ibrahim pbuh obeyed Allah completely, trusting in Him even in hardship. The greatest test came when Allah commanded Ibrahim pbuh in a dream to sacrifice his son Ismail. Ibrahim pbuh prepared to obey immediately. Ismail also submitted to Allah’s command and said: “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.” Both father and son showed complete obedience, faith, and sacrifice. Allah then replaced Ismail with a great sacrifice, and this event became one of the greatest symbols of Islam, remembered every year during Eid al-Adha. For this reason, we remember Ibrahim’s story as we offer sacrifice today and during these blessed days of Eid. Allah praised Ibrahim pbuh greatly in surah An-Najm, saying: “And Ibrahim, who fulfilled [his duties].” Meaning that he fulfilled every command of Allah without hesitation. Allah also says in surah An-Nahl: “Indeed, Ibrahim was a nation, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not among the polytheists. He was grateful for Allah’s blessings. Allah chose him and guided him to a straight path.” The relationship between Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Ibrahim is also very special. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ descended from Ismail, the son of Ibrahim pbuh, and experienced many hardships similar to those of Ibrahim pbuh. The Prophet ﷺ lost his parents early in life and also lost his sons during childhood, including his son Ibrahim, who was named after Prophet Ibrahim pbuh. One of the clearest signs of Ibrahim’s high status among Muslims is that his name is mentioned in every prayer. This is a unique honour given to Ibrahim pbuh. The rituals of Hajj are also closely connected to Ibrahim pbuh and his family. Ibrahim and Ismail built the Ka‘bah, the sa‘i between Safa and Marwah reminds Muslims of Hajar’s struggle, and the sacrifice commemorates the story of Ismail. These acts connect Muslims to the history of faith and monotheism established by Ibrahim. The message brought by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is therefore not separate from the message of Ibrahim. Islam continues the same path of monotheism, sincerity, patience, sacrifice, and steadfastness upon truth. Ibrahim pbuh teaches believers that trials are part of faith. Each and every one of you dear brothers and sisters will face hardship in family, wealth, or personal life, but you must remain patient and trust Allah. Ibrahim pbuh taught us that the pleasure of Allah is greater than worldly comfort and that truth and monotheism are worth every sacrifice.
