Allah’s Wisdom: Key to Tranquillity During Trials - الإيمان بحكمة الله مفتاح الطمأنينة عند البلاء
Belief in Allah’s Wisdom: The Key to Tranquillity During Trials One of the most common questions during hardship is: Why has this trial lasted so long? Why has relief been delayed? Why has this happened to me? Such questions are part of human nature. Yet the believer knows that every decree of Allah is based upon perfect knowledge, complete wisdom, and boundless mercy. Allah never ordains anything in vain. One of the greatest sources of strength during trials is reflecting on two of Allah's beautiful names: Al-'Alīm (The All-Knowing) and Al-Hakīm (The All-Wise). Allah knows everything that has happened, everything that will happen, and even what would have happened under different circumstances. He decrees nothing except with wisdom and benefit, whether people perceive it or not. For this reason, these two names frequently appear together throughout the Qur'an, reminding believers that every command and decree proceeds from perfect knowledge and flawless wisdom. The prophets (peace be upon them) were the greatest examples of submission because they knew their Lord better than anyone else. After losing Yusuf, then another son, and later being separated from a third, Prophet Ya'qub never objected to Allah's decree. Instead, he said in Surah Yusuf, in translation: "So patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me. Indeed, He alone is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise." Allah also says in Surah Al-Baqarah, in translation: "Perhaps you dislike something while it is good for you, and perhaps you love something while it is bad for you. Allah knows, while you do not know." Although this verse was revealed concerning fighting, its meaning applies to every aspect of life. We judge matters by what we can see, while Allah knows their true outcome. Among the clearest illustrations is the story of Musa and Al-Khidr in Surah Al-Kahf. The scuttled boat, the death of the young boy, and the rebuilt wall all appeared harmful, yet Allah later revealed the wisdom behind each event, teaching that His hidden wisdom is often far greater than what people can perceive. Likewise, Yusuf endured separation from his father, being thrown into a well, slavery, and unjust imprisonment. Yet every hardship became a step towards Allah establishing him in authority and saving an entire nation from famine. When the wisdom became clear, Yusuf declared in Surah Yusuf: "Indeed, my Lord is Most Subtle in accomplishing whatever He wills. Surely He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise." Similarly, Musa fled his homeland in fear, yet that journey became the means of his safety, marriage, spiritual preparation, and ultimately his appointment as a Messenger of Allah. Another remarkable example is the incident of Al-Ifk (the false accusation against A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her). Although it caused immense pain, Allah declared in Surah An-Nur, in translation: "Do not think it is bad for you; rather, it is good for you." Its goodness included A'ishah's public vindication through Qur'anic revelation and the establishment of laws protecting the honour of Muslims. Allah concludes these verses by saying, in translation: "Allah makes the signs clear to you, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise." Our own lives also remind us of this reality. A person may lose a job, miss a journey, or fail to achieve a desired goal, only to discover later that Allah had protected them and opened a better door. This helps us understand Allah's words: "Allah knows, while you do not know." Therefore, if something escapes you, do not say, "Allah deprived me." Rather say, "Allah protected me, had mercy on me, and chose what was better for me.". The greatest blessing Allah grants is faith. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ supplicated: "Do not make our calamity be in our religion." Worldly success is not necessarily a sign of Allah's pleasure, nor is hardship a sign of His displeasure. The true measure is guidance, steadfastness, and sound faith. The Prophet ﷺ also said: "Indeed, Allah protects His believing servant while He loves him, just as you prevent your sick loved one from certain food and drink out of concern for them." So, just as a patient may dislike being prevented from harmful food, Allah may withhold something His servant desires because He knows it would harm his religion or worldly life. Allah says in Surah Al-Anbiya, in translation: "We test you with both hardship and ease as a trial." Know dear brothers and sisters that Allah tests His servants through difficulty and prosperity, through health and illness, and through wealth and poverty. He does so to show those who remain patient, grateful, and content with His decree so be aware of the trials of this life and prepare yourself with patience, with gratitude and with contentment. We ask Allah to bless us with certainty in His wisdom, contentment with His decree and patience during trials, indeed, He alone is The All-Knowing, The All-Wise. And all praise be to Allah…
