Norfolk Southern trains in Claypool, Indiana, June 9, 14 & 15, 2025

Fifteen Norfolk Southern trains passing through Claypool, Indiana. All trains were seen over the three days of June 9, 14 & 15, 2025. Claypool, Indiana, is where Norfolk Southern's east/west Chicago District crosses the north/south Marion Branch. The Chicago District is former Nickel Plate Road/Norfolk & Western/Norfolk Southern. The Marion Branch is former Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway (Big Four)/New York Central/Penn Central/Conrail. Norfolk Southern received the Marion Branch as part of the Conrail split with CSX. After the Conrail split, Norfolk Southern installed a wye in the northeast quadrant of the diamond. This wye allows trains to move between the Chicago District at Claypool, Indiana, and the Chicago Line in Goshen, Indiana. Trains to and from the southern portion of the railroad can now access Chicago connections through the large hump yard in Elkhart, Indiana.
