Jane Goodall, what makes us different from chimpanzees? | Sternstunde Philosophie | SRF Kultur
Jane Goodall's biography is cinematic: even as a little girl, she dreamed of going into the jungle with the great apes. Without a degree in her pocket, the young British woman managed to become the most famous primate researcher in the world. Barbara Bleisch meets her for an interview. Topics in this episode: 00:00 Who is Jane Goodall? 12:47 How did Jane Goodall's career begin? 25:30 What is the difference between humans and animals? 38:11 Do we need basic rights for great apes? 52:45 Can climate change still be stopped? š Subscribe to SRF Kultur Sternstunden on YouTube now š https://www.youtube.com/srfkultur?sub... As the family did not have enough money, studying was out of the question. Instead, Jane Goodall became a secretary. When a friend invited her to Kenya, she packed her bags. Through a series of lucky coincidences, she met the well-known anthropologist Louis Leakey, who hired her as his secretary and recognized her talent for studying animals. At the age of 26, the completely inexperienced Goodall ended up in Gombe, Tanzania, where she spent many years researching the lives of chimpanzees. The girl from London became a world-famous researcher and UN peace ambassador. With her foundation, she supports the protection of chimpanzees and fights against local poverty, because Goodall recognized this early on: Animal and environmental protection is always also a commitment to social justice. Barbara Bleisch meets the grande dame of primate research to talk about dreams and perseverance, about humans and apes and about the future of the planet.
