Dark Romance Is Just A List Of Crimes

I spent most of last year side-eyeing my FYP because the "Dark Romance" corner of BookTok was genuinely making me feel like I was the only person left with a working logic center, especially the book called Haunting Adeline. My original understanding of the genre was rooted in gothic atmosphere and moody aesthetics, but I woke up and suddenly the internet was rebranding literal criminal records as “spicy chemistry.” Seeing thousands of people simp for a lead character whose behavior looks more like a 10-year prison sentence really highlights how desensitized we've become. How we moved from atmospheric gothic tragedy to sanitizing reproductive coercion and calling it “intense devotion” is a shift that probably needs to be studied in a lab. Realistically, if your love interest is someone you’d need a permanent legal advisor to survive in the real world, the internal logic of the book has probably just collapsed. I’m exhausted by authors trying to out-dark each other for clicks while we ignore the biological damage and lack of human rights on the page. We really need a hard reset as a society before we completely forget what an actual green flag looks like.
