THE WIND AND THE RAIN by Robert Silverberg
A future reclamation team of scientists visit a hopelessly polluted Earth, studying it as if a massive work of art and oddly fascinated by the collaborative effort required to express such reverence of depredation. Originally published in a 1973 collection of the author's stories entitled Unfamiliar Territory. Re-published in multiple such collections, including: one in Dutch language in 1977, one in German in the same year, one in French in 1979, Beyond the Safe Zone in 1986, and The Collected Stories, Volume Three: 1969-1972, in 2008. It appeared in a Croatian magazine in 1982, as well as in multiple anthologies, including: Saving Worlds in 1973, Best of SF in 1974, The Wounded Planet in the same year, The Year's Best Science Fiction No. 7 in 1975, a Romanian one in 1989, and Bangs and Whimpers in 1999.
