After the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution on July 19, 1979, the National Directorate of the Sandinista Front emerged as the highest authority. It even placed itself above the Government Junta of National Reconstruction, which sought to govern Nicaragua, mired in poverty and division as a result of the war against the Somoza dictatorship. The National Directorate was composed of nine comandantes: Tomás Borge, Daniel Ortega, Víctor Tirado, Humberto Ortega, Henry Ruiz, Jaime Wheelock, Bayardo Arce, Luis Carrión, and Carlos Núñez. These men, dressed in military uniform, were the most powerful in the 1980s. But what has become of them 46 years later?
