The M77 southbound onto the A77
Before the motorway reaches the outskirts of Glasgow, we continue south on the M77, one of Scotland's newest motorway links. This route provides a fast connection between the city and the southwest, carrying us away from the urban landscape and into the rolling countryside of Ayrshire. Passing the exits for Newton Mearns and Fenwick, the scenery gradually changes. Housing developments give way to open farmland, with gentle hills stretching across the horizon. On a clear day, the higher ground to the east offers impressive views over the surrounding countryside, while to the west the landscape begins to hint at the coast that we'll soon be following. The motorway continues past the junction for Kilmarnock, one of Ayrshire's largest towns and historically renowned for engineering, textiles and the world-famous Johnnie Walker whisky, which has its origins here. Although the town lies just to our east, the M77 bypasses it completely, allowing through traffic to continue uninterrupted towards the coast. A shorth distance beyond Kilmarnock, the motorway comes to an end at Dutch House Roundabout, where the M77 seamlessly becomes the A77. Despite the change in road number, the journey continues on a modern dual carriageway. Continuing south on the A77, we pass through the gently undulating countryside of South Ayrshire. Wide open fields, small farms and scattered woodland dominate the landscape, while the road remains fast and free-flowing. Soon, signs begin to appear for Glasgow Prestwick Airport, Scotlands only airport with its own railway station and a facility with a long aviation history dating back to the 1930s. The airport has served military, commercial and transatlantic flights over the decades and remains an important centre for aircraft maintenance and pilot training. Just beyond the airport, the A77 crosses over local roads before continuing south towards Ayr, Girvan and the dramatic coastline of southwest Scotland, where the scenery becomes even more spectacular as our journey unfolds.
