The BBC Radio dramatization of "The Seven Per Cent Solution" (1993) starring Simon Callow as Sherlock Holmes offers a revisionist take on the famous detective's "Great Hiatus." Dr. John Watson, gravely concerned about Holmes's escalating cocaine addiction and his increasingly delusional belief that Professor James Moriarty is a criminal mastermind, conspires with Holmes's brother, Mycroft. They trick Holmes into traveling to Vienna, Austria, where he is placed under the care of none other than Sigmund Freud. Through a combination of therapy, including hypnosis, Freud works to cure Holmes of his addiction and his fixations. As Holmes undergoes this treatment, he and Freud become entangled in a real mystery: the kidnapping of one of Freud's patients, a case that soon reveals international implications and a conspiracy that could lead to a European war. The story also delves into Holmes's past, using Freud's methods to uncover a repressed childhood trauma that explains some of his eccentricities and his intense, distorted view of Moriarty. Ultimately, the dramatisation offers an alternative explanation for Holmes's disappearance from the public eye, presenting it not as a battle to the death with Moriarty, but as a period of recovery and self-discovery.
