The asphalt is frequently interrupted by longer stretches of gravel road. A wonderful route through the rainforest, following the Rio Frio. We find our first fuel after 277 km in La Junta; before that, it's only diesel. Our Cabaña CyG in Chaitén is very difficult to find—no sign, nothing—but we manage somehow in the end. Today we eat the remaining aluminum foil trays, and I finally get to enjoy this delicacy. We even have a fireplace, so we light a cozy fire. Outside the cabaña, the frogs have started croaking. Good night. Daily distance: 418 km February 21, 2025: Three ferries from Chaitén to Puerto Montt We don't have to be at the first ferry until 12:30 PM, but we need to refuel first. To give ourselves plenty of time, we set off at 9:15 AM, even though it's only about 50 km to the ferry terminal. A good decision, because we have to wait a long time at the gas station! Luckily, the tanker truck lets us go ahead, because after that, half the gas station is closed for refueling, and progress slows even further. We also get engine oil for Frank's bike here; it's the only CFMoto that's used any oil. The 50 km through the jungle are manageable despite the rain, but unfortunately, we don't have a good view of the Chaitén volcano, which we could at least partially see from the gas station. The first two ferries should definitely be booked well in advance (weeks). Since the tickets can only be paid for with Chilean credit cards, we used a travel agency (https://www.contactchile.cl), even though it's a bit more expensive. We paid about €40 per person; another advantage is the smooth handling of the transaction in German. At 11:30, we arrive at the ferry in Caleta Gonzalo and still have time for coffee and scrambled eggs at the Caleta Gonzalo Lodge – delicious! Right on time at 1:05 PM, the ferry departs half full, but they don't let anyone else on, presumably because of the two large tour buses. After a short ferry ride, we travel about 10 km across an island and then board a second, larger ferry, where this time we stand in the lower deck. The crossing takes 3.5 hours, and we arrive in Hornopirén at 6:00 PM. From there, it's a good 50 km to the next smaller ferry at La Arena. As motorcyclists, we have to wait at the back of the queue (normally, you ride straight through because there's always a space for a motorcycle). At 8:40 PM, we finally arrive at the Gran Hotel Vicente Costanera in Puerto Montt. After checking in, we park our motorcycles in the parking garage diagonally opposite and then go straight to the neighboring restaurant, La Fuente de Alí, where we enjoy delicious burgers and Corona mojitos. A perfect end to the day. . ' ...
