How could a 38-year-old woman pass herself off as a child for over a decade without raising suspicion? Amanda moved people by claiming she had been abandoned, abused, and a victim of rituals. Her targets were primarily people involved in social causes. Whenever she risked being exposed, she would change cities and states and start all over again. She presented herself as a minor to obtain lodging, food, and care intended for children and adolescents. Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, 38 years old, was born in Ceará and traveled through several Brazilian states. There are records of her passing through at least six states. In the Federal District, she presented herself as Gabriela in 2013. In Goiás, in 2014, she said her name was Melissa. In Minas Gerais, in 2018, she used the name Beatriz. Her age, however, always remained the same: 13 years old. She changed her identity, but not her story. She claimed to be a sick, abandoned teenager who was a victim of abuse and violence. In photographs, she appeared dressed in children's clothing and using objects associated with childhood, such as pacifiers and baby bottles. One of the victims, Tatiane, even tattooed one of the false names used by Amanda on her arm. To make the story believable, Amanda created several fictional characters, including a grandmother, a father, and a mother, sending messages to the victims as if she were each of these people. The versions included dramatic accounts of serious illnesses, fatal accidents, sexual abuse, and other traumatic situations. When the victims tried to meet her in person or confirm the facts, contradictions arose, and Amanda disappeared. Over the years, she was arrested several times. In early June, she was arrested again in Joinville, where she allegedly lived for 14 months as the adopted daughter of a couple. The Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Catarina accused her of fraud and identity theft. According to the investigation, Amanda allegedly obtained housing, food, transportation, and even expensive medications through the stories she told. With the case's widespread media coverage, investigations and legal proceedings were reopened in other states. Forensic psychiatrist Guido Palomba stated that the case presents characteristics consistent with Munchausen syndrome, a disorder in which a person simulates or causes symptoms to assume the role of a patient and obtain attention or care. Radiological examinations revealed hundreds of needles scattered throughout Amanda's body. Police suspect she herself inserted these objects to reinforce the stories she told her victims. Currently, Amanda is in pretrial detention. The Santa Catarina court accepted the charges of fraud and identity theft. If a psychiatric disorder is confirmed, she may undergo specialized treatment.
