Police are investigating the death of an 11-year-old boy who was allegedly poisoned with a substance known as "chumbinho" in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro state. The main suspicion is that the poison was in a cake the child ate after returning from school. Investigators are now trying to determine who may be involved in the case and what the motives were. Arthur followed a routine set by his parents. After school, he would go home. However, a sequence of events drastically changed his life. On Saturday, May 30th, the boy was at his mother's house, where the family was celebrating his grandmother's birthday. On the morning of June 1st, he went to school. His mother also went to the school for a meeting with the administration. After school, Arthur took the bus to his father's house. Around 6:30 PM, he arrived alone, with his backpack on and still in his school uniform. Surveillance footage shows him ringing the doorbell, looking at the security camera, and entering the house. About five hours later, he began to feel unwell and was rushed to the hospital. His stepmother received him. According to her account, she found a chocolate cake inside his backpack, along with the clothes he had worn over the weekend. According to her testimony, the cake was wrapped in plastic, and Arthur said his mother had put it in his backpack. After dinner, the boy ate the cake and, according to his stepmother, soon after began to complain of dizziness. The family immediately took him to the hospital. During the journey, Arthur had to be resuscitated in the car. After the initial examinations, the medical team called both parents and informed them that the child showed signs consistent with poisoning. His clinical picture began with diarrhea, nausea, and dizziness, later progressing to seizures and cardiac arrest. Two weeks after being placed on assisted ventilation, Arthur suffered another cardiac arrest and died. The child's death also brought to light some family conflicts. The father claims to have heard from his son that his stepfather threatened to leave the house if Arthur continued living there. The mother confirms that this conversation took place, but insists there was no chocolate cake at the birthday party held that weekend. The school environment is another line of investigation. The meeting held on June 1st was intended to discuss an incident that resulted in the student's suspension. The father, Ademir Mello, states that he is not ruling out any hypothesis and argues that all possibilities should be investigated. The State Department of Education has not revealed details about possible incidents involving Arthur at school. In a statement, it only informed that it is providing support to the family and is cooperating with the authorities. The police have requested surveillance camera footage to reconstruct the route taken by the boy between school and his father's house. Investigators are still awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which may determine if the victim ingested rat poison or another type of toxic substance. While grieving, the father continues to search for answers about what happened to his son.
