This is a conversation with Li Dan, the winner of the 2024 Open Call for Japanese Painting Grand Prize, recorded in conjunction with her solo exhibition (held from April 15th to 28th, 2026). As a student from China, she entered the 2024 open call and won the grand prize. This year, she graduated from Joshibi University of Art and Design Graduate School, and this is her first solo exhibition since beginning her full-fledged artistic career. Behind Li Dan's works, which everyone describes as "unlike anything seen before," lies a unique approach that combines the history of Chinese painting with the techniques of Japanese painting's mineral pigments.
