It's Special! It's Awesome! It's March 11th! - Alan Doyle & the BBB + EPs, Kitchener ON (1st show)
Two sold-out nights, Rick Springfield & March 11th Anniversary 00:00 / "I Won't Tell Your Mother" 01:53 / Janice Brings Alan A Beer & A North Bay Ice Fishing Tale 04:28 / The Crawl w. The East Pointers 06:43 / Old Black Rum 11:11 / Early Kitchener GBS & Consequence Free 15:20 / Ordinary Day w. the EPs (partial - ends abruptly) 00:00 I bought my ticket for the March 11 Alan Doyle Already Dancing Tour show at Kitchener’s Centre in the Square the moment the gig went on sale (and got a great seat for my timely efforts) because it was a not-to-be-missed show: Not only is that always a great venue and crowd for Alan and his gang, but this show would also be taking place on the 33rd anniversary of Alan’s decision to make a living in music, the 33rd anniversary of Great Big Sea’s first show. I haven’t missed a March 11 gig (GBS or AD), wherever those gigs have occurred, since I’ve been seeing these shows. I flew down early to TO from Ottawa, bused to Kitchener, was fortunate enough to be hosted by an absolutely lovely couple (and their adorable pup!). We had a great afternoon filled with thought-provoking conversation (yes, this is my definition of a great afternoon) and lots of tail-wagging (the pup’s). Come showtime, I was excited; March 11th is a pretty big deal to me. To Alan too, judging from how many times he talked about the anniversary during this show (he’d mentioned it the night before in Ottawa too, noting when it was just about an hour until officially 33rd Anniversary Day). I have some of that talk here in this video, plus some reminiscing about early Kitchener GBS days - along with an ice fishing story from North Bay…it all makes sense, contextually (beer is involved, unsurprisingly, in both the story and in the telling). Befitting the auspicious anniversarial occasion, I’ve included two drinking songs (West Coast and East Coast) in this vid. I’d planned to video the entire GBS Medley, which didn’t work out, but I did manage to get Consequence Free, maybe the most appropriate song of the three for the evening. And closing the video the same way the show itself was closed, with Ordinary Day, was a no-brainer. On this day, on this anniversary, of course I’d do that. Or so I thought. I did get part of it - it starts late and ends early, with a bang. Or perhaps a crash. I didn’t video as much as I’d hoped - it just didn’t work out, as things at times do not - and I’m only putting the most viewable of what I actually did get in this vid. But it was a good show for a great crowd on an important day, and the truth of all of that always manages to make itself clearly seen, even when the view of some of the details get obscured.
