So, it's worth remembering a little about the console as well: The PlayStation, often called the PlayStation 1 or PSOne, was the first video game console manufactured by Sony, released on December 3, 1994, in Japan, September 9, 1995, in the United States, and September 29, 1995, in Europe. From its launch until 2006, when its production was discontinued, the PlayStation sold over 100 million units. It ranks as the second best-selling home console in the world, with over 100 million units sold, surpassed only by its successor, the PlayStation 2, which sold over 150 million units. The beginnings of what became the PlayStation were launched in 1986 with a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony. Nintendo had already developed floppy disk technology to complement cartridges, in the form of the Family Computer Disk System, and wanted to continue this complementary storage strategy for the Super Famicom. Nintendo approached Sony to develop a CD-ROM add-on, tentatively titled "Play Station" or "SNES-CD."[9] A contract was signed, and work began. Nintendo chose someone they had worked with before, Ken Kutaragi, later called "The Father of the PlayStation," who sold Nintendo on the use of the Sony SPC-700 processor for the eight-channel ADPCM sound set in the Super Famicom/SNES console through an impressive demonstration of the processor's capabilities. The video game company, however, broke with Sony, an industry neophyte, because it felt it would lose too much control and profits derived from selling games on CD. The PlayStation (officially abbreviated as PS and commonly known as the PS1 or its codename PSX) is a home video game console developed and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released on 3 December 1994 in Japan, on 9 September 1995 in North America, on 29 September 1995 in Europe, and on 15 November 1995 in Australia, and was the first of the PlayStation lineup of video game consoles. As a fifth generation console, the PlayStation primarily competed with the Nintendo 64 and the Sega Saturn. The PlayStation was the first "computer entertainment platform" to ship over 100 million units, which it had reached nine years after its initial launch. In July 2000, a redesigned, slim version called the PS one was released, replacing the original gray console and named appropriately to avoid confusion with its successor, the PlayStation 2.
