News Words: Flabbergasted

Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words. Two leaders in the development of artificial intelligence, or AI, recently won the Nobel Prize in Physics. FLABBERGASTED John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton were awarded the prize for their discoveries and inventions that formed the building blocks of machine learning. A member of the Academy phoned Hinton to deliver the news and asked how he felt. “I’m flabbergasted. I had no idea this would happen.” To be flabbergasted is to be shocked by something that is not expected.
