Breakthru The vocal introduction that opens "Breakthru" on the original album — the harmonies that Freddie loved — isn't here. It was removed because it doesn't belong to the world of this album. This version of "Breakthru" doesn't need it. Instead it starts the way the session tape starts: Freddie saying "ok, another one" — and then a rimshot, a hi-hat, a bass and guitar landing the first chord together with the particular lightness that happens when musicians are playing for themselves and not yet for a record. What follows is built in layers. The session take provides the foundation: real drums, real bass, Freddie's vocal with the rougher edges still on it, and the Hammond organ that was present in the original mix but buried — here it's forward, present throughout, until the version shifts. The solo section uses the original bass track from 1989, with the guitars and keyboards stripped away and replaced by their session equivalents. Then Brian's guitar solo arrives, and with it the full 1989 mix takes over and carries the song to its end. It sounds, more than anything else on this album, like a live recording of a band that knew exactly what they were doing.
