EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #151: SLEDMERE Sledmere – “Valley Pool” Hello folks, this week in the East Riding we are taking on one of the most historically rich settlements in the entire county. Welcome to Sledmere, whose name literally means “pool in the valley” or “valley pool”. Sledmere has a crazy number of features which we will cover at length in this episode, and most of them are to be found along a single street that curves in an almost perfect arc around the village’s centrepiece. That would be the gorgeous Sledmere House - the iconic mansion built in 1751 which has been associated with the Sykes family since its construction. This is a tourist hotspot, and for good reason. Sledmere’s grounds feature lots to attract people to it, and on a summers day the place can be quite busy! It’s a busy place anyway though, lying as it does on a road that connects Driffield and Malton, although you can also reach York pretty easily from here too. Sledmere is the site of two interesting memorials – one of which is now a war memorial but started life as a replica Eleanor Cross. The other is for the Wolds Wagoners, a corps which was founded by Sir Mark Sykes the 6th Baronet. And if all that’s not enough, how about the little known Sledmere Castle, located away from the village near one of the surrounding woodlands. It’s a lot to try to take in, but we will anyway.
