SKIRPENBECK: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #105 of 172

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #105: SKIRPENBECK Moving away from Beverley where we’ve been for the last few episodes, today we’re back in the Northwestern corner of the East Riding, and there aren’t that many left up here. One of them that is though would be Skirpenbeck. This is a long thin village which is located just to the North East of Stamford Bridge. Skirpenbeck is a world away from the hustle and bustle of its near neighbour. It peacefully minds its own business, tucked away on a small strip of land between the A166 and a stretch of water, which gives the village its name. Skirpenbeck means “barren land by a beck or stream”, and its derived from Old Norse, combining the words “skerping” and “beck”. In the Domesday Book, its listed as Scarpenbec. Industrially, Skirpenbeck was and still is, all about farming. There are a lot of working farms in the village to this day. In the 18th century Skirpenbeck had a corn mill, powered by water. Its wheel was fed from a dam which is now dry. Quiet, secluded places like this often attract ghost stories and Skirpenbeck is no exception. The locals can tell you many a tale, including one of a child which can sometimes be seen at the window of a house – yet no child actually lives there. Hopefully, on this short stroll, we won’t see anything quite so terrifying. One man who definitely did live here was a famous artist, who went by the name of James Lloyd. There’s more on him coming shortly.
