The Holy Rosary: Sorrowful Mysteries – Friday, July 24, 2026 | Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Today we pray the Holy Rosary with the Sorrowful Mysteries for Friday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time. In the First Reading, God speaks through Jeremiah to a people who have wandered far — and instead of condemnation, he calls them home with a name that should stop every lost soul in its tracks: "Return, rebellious children, says the LORD, for I am your Master." One from a city, two from a clan — he gathers them individually, personally, and brings them to Zion. He promises to appoint over them shepherds after his own heart, who will shepherd them wisely and prudently. And in that day, Jerusalem itself will be called the LORD's throne, and all nations will stream to it (Jeremiah 3:14–17). In the Gospel, Jesus explains the Parable of the Sower in precise and searching detail — four kinds of ground, four kinds of hearing, four kinds of response to the same seed, the same word, the same offer of the Kingdom. The path where the word is stolen before it takes root. The rocky ground where joy is real but rootless. The thorns where worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke what was growing. And the rich soil — the one who hears the word, understands it, and bears fruit a hundredfold (Matthew 13:18–23). The Sorrowful Mysteries are the story of what the Sower was willing to suffer to keep sowing — even knowing that some ground would not receive the seed. These readings belong together in the most profound way. God calls the rebellious children home — and Christ explains exactly what prevents them from arriving: shallowness, distraction, the seduction of comfort and wealth. The Sorrowful Mysteries are the price the Sower paid to break open ground that was never going to yield on its own. As we pray today, we ask to be made into rich soil — not by our own effort alone, but by the patient, suffering, persistent love of the One who keeps sowing long after any reasonable farmer would have stopped.
