The Holy Rosary: Joyful Mysteries – Saturday, July 25, 2026 | Feast of Saint James, Apostle

Today we pray the Holy Rosary with the Joyful Mysteries on the Feast of Saint James, Apostle — one of the Twelve, son of Zebedee, brother of John, one of the three disciples Jesus brought to the Mount of Transfiguration and to the Garden of Gethsemane. James was the first of the Apostles to be martyred, beheaded by King Herod Agrippa around the year 44 AD, and his shrine in Santiago de Compostela in Spain has drawn pilgrims for over a thousand years. In the First Reading, Paul writes from prison with the unshakeable confidence of a man who has found what he was looking for: "I have learned, in whatever situation I find myself, to be self-sufficient. I can do all things in him who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:10–19). It is not the contentment of a comfortable man — it is the peace of a man who has been stripped of everything and discovered that Christ is enough. In the Gospel, the mother of James and John approaches Jesus with a mother's boldness and a mother's ambition: she asks that her two sons sit at his right and left in the Kingdom. Jesus turns to the brothers and asks the question that cuts through every desire for glory: "Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?" They say yes — and he says they will. But the seats of honor are not his to give. And then, to the indignant ten, Jesus reframes greatness entirely: "Whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave" (Matthew 20:20–28). The Joyful Mysteries begin in that same upside-down Kingdom — the King born in a stable, the Savior presented in poverty, the Son found in his Father's house doing not his own will but God's. These readings and this feast belong completely together. James said yes to the cup — and drank it. Paul learned contentment not in comfort but in chains. The mother of James asked for glory and Jesus offered a cross. The Joyful Mysteries show us where it all begins: in Mary's yes, in the manger's poverty, in the hidden life of Nazareth — the school where greatness is slowly, quietly, completely redefined. As we pray today, we ask for the grace to say yes to whatever cup is placed in our hands, and to find in that yes the strength that Paul found — the strength of the One who strengthens us.
