You can speak on a large stage, larger than you've ever done before. But you don't have a speech prepared. You don't even know what you COULD talk about. Would you take the opportunity? The great speakers of history were often thrust into their roles. Martin Luther King was just a pastor organising bus boycotts. Harvey Milk was just a city councilor trying to clean dog shit out of parks (yes really!). Greta Thunberg was just a student on school strike. They didn't ask for the opportunity to become an ambassador for a greater cause, but they accepted it when it came their way. This was the theme of Hannah Cheng's speech at the 2024 Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking. She realised that you will never "be ready" for any opportunity that comes your way, you just have to accept it anyway and work it out. When she accepted the opportunity to enter the International Speech Contest, she ended up finishing 2nd out of the entire world. How did she do it?
