Residents of Montreal's east end have been waiting decades for a public transit system to get to downtown more quickly. After François Legault's government abandoned the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) in the east, deeming it too expensive, a tramway project was presented by the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM). Its construction will be entrusted to Mobilité Infra Québec, the new government corporation created to accelerate major public transit projects. Its director, who wants to reexamine the tramway project, does not rule out the possibility of another mode of transportation being chosen.
