The Pope Who Drank the Blood of Children
There is a pope buried in Saint Peter's whose bronze tomb shows him raising his hand in blessing, and the story attached to him is about as far from a blessing as you can get. His name was Pope Innocent VIII, though almost nobody who knew him thought the name fit. He sold church offices by the dozen, took a Turkish sultan's money to jail a prince, and died in a way that people have been whispering about for five hundred years. I spent a long time trying to separate what actually happened from what got invented later. What I found surprised me.
