A Hague Icon: the PCC is 75 years old!!!!! In this 70-minute special, we show you the story of the Hague PCC. With footage from then and now… What has the PCC brought to The Hague… We asked a number of visitors to the HOVM… With information read aloud here and there by Hans Ruitenberg, we travel through the history of this Hague tram icon… During special events, we were often present with a camera and captured footage that was shared throughout… For instance, we visited the HOVM’s 75 Years PCC exhibition and took part in various rides… Something about the PCC From 1949 to 1993, the PCCs could be seen in the Hague cityscape. These trams were popular with the public, who until then had been accustomed to pre-war rolling stock. In 1949, the first 'PCC' was delivered to the HTM. The name comes from the original creators. "PCC" stands for Presidents' Conference Committee; the tram is based on an American tram conceived there in the 1930s. That American tram was much wider than the tram we are used to in The Hague. The first two trams were made from kits produced in the United States that were identical to a series of PCCs for Detroit. They were adapted to the requirements set by the HTM. For instance, the trams were made narrower and shorter. A striking feature of the first series of PCCs was the many small side windows with small windows above them for standing passengers. Why these trams… Like many other tram companies, the HTM suffered greatly during the Second World War. Due to overloading and inadequate maintenance, the situation had deteriorated significantly. A large number of trams and buses were borrowed by the Germans during the war years. After the liberation, much requisitioned rolling stock was recovered and put back into service… A considerable number of trams had to be written off due to irreparable damage. The HTM placed an order for 16 new trams with Werkspoor in Utrecht. The HTM abandoned the plan to order more trams of this type… The HTM wanted to try out the PCC trams.
