In the Studio: Shaqúelle Whyte | White Cube
‘I want to make paintings which hum, and I want them to hum because of the way in which the surface is used.’ – Shaqúelle Whyte From his studio in East London, Shaqúelle Whyte discusses his painting practice and introduces the works on view in his exhibition ‘Nine nights; Strange fruit’ at White Cube Hong Kong. Rooted in personal history and shaped by Jamaican funerary traditions, Whyte’s paintings trace the emotional and temporal reverberations of familial grief. In the works on view, figures fracture, double and ripple, compressing multiple temporalities within a single visual field. ‘Shaqúelle Whyte: Nine nights; Strange fruit’ is on view at White Cube Hong Kong from 6 February – 14 March 2026.
