Rugged Adventures: Mazourka Canyon | High Desert to the Sierra Nevada

In this Rugged Adventures episode, we’re setting out on a multi-day off-road journey through some of the most remote and underrated landscapes in the West—starting in Mina, Nevada, crossing into Northern California, and finishing south through Mazourka Canyon near Death Valley. This route takes us from high desert terrain scattered with old mining relics and strange historical landmarks—like a cabin built under a rock—into the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where winter conditions can bring snow even in an otherwise barren desert environment. Over three days, we’ll explore: -Remote high-desert trails along the Nevada–California border -Historic mining areas and unique backcountry landmarks -Snowy mountain routes between 7,000–9,000 feet -Scenic points of interest off the main route -The Mazourka Canyon trail, just west of Death Valley National Park Most of this route stays off the pavement, with only short highway connections, and offers countless opportunities to explore side trails, camp remotely, and experience the quiet solitude of the backcountry. Throughout the trip, we’re navigating with onX Offroad, using human-mapped trails, points of interest, and offline maps to confidently explore everything from abandoned mining sites to high-elevation mountain passes—especially important when conditions change quickly with weather and snow. This isn’t about checking off a single trail—it’s about the experience of linking landscapes together, finding unexpected places, and exploring routes that don’t always make it onto the popular lists.
