The Nevada BDR is NOT what I expected | Driving my Ford F-150 Raptor through the Silver State

The Nevada Backcountry Discovery Route is roughly 900 miles of high desert, sagebrush valleys, ghost towns, and open two-track running from Jarbidge, Nevada all the way south to the historic Route 66 town of Oatman, Arizona. And if you think you know what to expect from a Nevada road trip...think again. I rolled into the Nevada BDR fresh off finishing the Idaho BDR, with a Ford Raptor that still had electrical gremlins to sort out. Day one on the trail I got the truck fixed, and from there it was smooth sailing through some of the most uniquely bizarre and surprisingly beautiful backcountry I've driven. The Nevada BDR is a different animal from most routes in the BDR lineup. It's not about technical terrain - it's about flow. Fast open sections, silty two-tracks, wide valley roads, and long stretches where you just settle in and let the desert do its thing. For a full-size off-road truck, this route is an absolute blast. Along the way we hit the International Car Forest of the Last Church outside Goldfield, one of the strangest and most memorable stops I've made on any route anywhere. We rolled through the old mining towns of Goldfield, Goldpoint, Rhyolite, and Belmont, places that feel frozen somewhere between boom and bust. And we finished on historic Route 66 in Oatman, Arizona. But the absolute highlight of the entire Nevada BDR? Camping in a wide open valley surrounded by wild mustangs. Watching entire herds move across the landscape and come down to water as the sun dropped is the kind of experience you can't plan for and can't recreate.
