These beds were sown back in February and transplanted in March, with some planting continuing into May. 🍂 The Plan Behind the Year-Round Harvest Achieving a continuous food supply comes down to simple succession planting. I walk through how I time my seed sowing and transplanting (from February through May) to carry the garden through winter and into spring. Some beds are ready now, others are slowly maturing with shorter days, and empty beds will wait for warmer weather before spring planting resumes. 🥕 Root-to-Stem Tips From This Harvest I share practical harvesting techniques throughout: using coriander roots for extra flavour in Asian cooking, harvesting just the larger beetroot from a clump to let the rest grow on, treating sprouting broccoli leaves like kale when the plants haven't yet formed flower heads, and grabbing volunteer potatoes that popped up in the pathway. Fast-growing radishes make a quick addition to any winter meal. 🍽 From Garden to Table This harvest is destined for two simple, warming meals: a colourful root vegetable roast with beetroot, carrot, parsnip, potato, and fennel, and a quick stir-fry using kale, tatsoi, coriander, and those tiny broccoli florets. I also pull an entire endive head for a big fresh salad, showing how winter greens keep the kitchen vibrant even on cold days. ❄️ Lessons From Working With Frost and Pests Winter gardening isn't without its challenges. I point out a touch of frost damage on the green cauliflower, slugs in the potato bed, and a few insect-damaged broccoli florets-then show how simple trimming and washing turn those into perfectly good food. One cabbage stayed in the ground a little too long, but it's still a solid harvest with just a quick rinse to evict any resident critters. Why This Matters Seeing a productive garden in the middle of July challenges the assumption that cool-climate growers have to accept a bare patch through winter.
