101-year-old Jose Planned to Stay 3 Months and Stayed 75 Years
From the seaside town of Bournemouth, England, to the red heart of Australia, centenarian Jose Petrick reflects on a life that spans continents, wars, and decades of history. Jose’s childhood was filled with seaside memories at her parents’ beach hut, but everything changed with the outbreak of the Second World War. Trained as a nurse, she served in Portsmouth, caring for the wounded from the D-Day campaign. After the war, seeking adventure, Jose set off to Australia on what was meant to be a short working holiday. She travelled through Sydney, Hobart, and Adelaide before deciding to see “the real Australia” — the outback. Taking a governess job on a cattle station 300 miles from Alice Springs, she planned to stay three months. Instead, she met “the guy next door” and stayed for the next 75 years. Following her husband Martyn’s death, Jose began a new chapter as a cadet journalist at the Centralian Advocate. She went on to write several beloved books on local history, including "The History of Alice Springs through Landmarks and Street Names". In 2010, she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her contribution to preserving the town’s heritage.
