Traditional Foodways of the Cederberg: Farming, Food, and Plant Knowledge

In this video, the Beukeskraal community in the Cederberg shares their rich foodways heritage: from generations of agroecological farming to making ash brood (sourdough bread baked in the ashes) and potjiekos prepared with local vegetables. The video concludes with a storytelling circle about medicinal herbs and wild foods, where we also make indigenous herbal tea. The knowledge shared in this film belongs to the communities who are its custodians. It should not be copied, commercialized, or used without their consent. For those who wish to learn more or explore respectful collaborations, please reach out via the email address provided at the end of the video. Kosbaar Video Series – Foodways Across Ecosystems in the Northern Cederberg As part of a long-term, community-driven research partnership with the University of Cape Town and in collaboration with People and Plants International, we have co-produced a series of short films that capture local food practices and the voices of their custodians. By centering participatory media, the series explores how film can support cultural preservation and intergenerational knowledge-sharing. It invites reflection on how creative methodologies can foster more grounded, community-led ways of documenting and valuing traditional food knowledge.
