I was going to write the word “joy,” but it’s something bigger than that. Joy is an explosion; it bursts forth, vibrates, and then disappears. It’s an explosion. What widows experience is something else entirely. What widows experience has all the hallmarks of a long-lasting, enduring, stable, lasting existence—a beginning of being. What I see in the faces and expressions of widows, I dare say, is happiness. Of course, we all know cases of widows who are desolate, devastated by the death of their husband or partner. But today I want to talk about the others, those whom we have all seen—men and women—flourish after the funeral.
