While Detroit was building millions of identical cars like toy soldiers lined up, six Italian families were doing something completely different. They took the mechanics of a #Ferrari, an #AlfaRomeo, a #Lamborghini — and sewed on a unique, unrepeatable body, like a tailor-made suit. They were called Pininfarina, Bertone, Zagato, Ghia, Touring, and Vignale. The Cisitalia 202 at the MoMA in New York. The Lamborghini Miura that redesigned the very concept of a supercar. The Ferrari 250 GT California sold for $18.5 million. The Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato for ten million euros. Without them, the most beautiful cars in the world would never have existed. And today? Pininfarina is Indian — from Mahindra. Ghia is American—owned by Ford. Bertone went bankrupt in 2014.
