In 1973, his appearance on the Fantástico program marked a turning point in national culture. His androgynous body, countertenor voice, and theatrical aesthetic transformed Ney into the first artist to bring queer performance to the center of the Brazilian popular imagination. The investigation shows how the dictatorship's television—controlled but driven by profit—ended up opening space for what it was trying to repress. Ney Matogrosso became a mass-market product and, at the same time, a symbol of rupture. The video examines this contradiction through the lens of historical materialism, connecting art, economics, and politics. We also compare Ney to other icons of the time, such as Rogéria and the Dzi Croquettes group, to understand why only he managed to break through the barriers of censorship and reach a wide audience. It is a sociocultural and historical analysis of Brazil in the 1970s—a country that, between censorship and modernization, transformed transgression into spectacle and revealed how the cultural industry can amplify what it intends to contain.
