It was an economic, cultural, and political structure created in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro during a period of dictatorship, repression, and racial exclusion. In this video, I explain how Black Rio functioned in practice: Who organized the dances, how the sound systems operated, where the money came from, what the relationship with record labels was, and why the movement was seen as a threat by both the State and the cultural elite. The analysis shows that Black Rio wasn't simply "outside the industry." It created a parallel industry, based on dances, ticket sales, DJs, suburban clubs, and direct cultural consumption. At the same time, it underwent a process of co-optation by the major record labels, especially from 1976 onwards, when the recording industry realized the size of that audience. The video also explains: The context of the military dictatorship and the so-called economic miracle Why samba and MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) didn't resonate with suburban Black youth The role of sound systems as cultural enterprises The actions of central figures such as Dom Filó, Soul Grand Prix, Furacão 2000, and Rômulo Costa Police repression and monitoring by the DOPS (Department of Political and Social Order) The relationship between Black Rio and Paul Gilroy's concept of the Black Atlantic Finally, the video shows why Black Rio was not the last musical movement outside the industry. On the contrary, it paved the way for even more autonomous forms of cultural production, such as Funk Carioca and Tecnobrega, which created their own markets, outside the control of major record labels. This video is a historical and economic analysis of Brazilian popular music, aimed at those who want to understand how culture, market, and power are organized in practice.
