That's what we'll be talking about in today's video: what a scaphoid fracture is, its symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. First of all, it's important to know that the scaphoid is one of the 8 bones that form the bony structure of the wrist and, being the largest and most important, is susceptible to fractures in cases of wrist trauma. The scaphoid is a bone with specific characteristics, as its blood supply is scarce, thus leading to complications when a scaphoid fracture occurs. Scaphoid fractures are more common in young adults, usually in their 20s and 30s, and can occur from falls where the patient falls and lands on their outstretched hand. And what are the symptoms of a scaphoid fracture? Typically, in cases of scaphoid fracture, the patient may report wrist pain, edema (swelling) most noticeably at the base of the thumb, and difficulty moving the finger and wrist. Internal bleeding may also occur, appearing as a dark color under the skin. How is it diagnosed? Generally, the diagnosis of a scaphoid fracture is made based on the patient's clinical presentation and can be classified through an X-ray of the hand or wrist to confirm the scaphoid fracture or other possible injuries in the same area. It's important to remember that a diagnosis by an orthopedic surgeon is ideal for a complete analysis and appropriate treatment. And how is a scaphoid fracture treated? Treatment depends on the fracture classification. It can be conservative, consisting of immobilization with a cast, lasting approximately 6 to 8 weeks, or surgical, which is indicated when the fracture is displaced or associated with other injuries requiring surgical treatment.
