Dungtsho Lake Hike
• Distance: 30 km (19 miles) return • Starting Altitude: 2,500 m (8,202 ft) • Maximum Altitude: 4,286 m (14,061 ft) • Elevation Gain: 1,800 m (5,905 ft) • Duration: 12-13 hours (full day) • Difficulty: Moderate - Challenging Some places don't reveal themselves easily. You have to earn them, step by step, breath by breath, through thinning air and shifting mist. This is the Dungtsho Lake hike. 30 kilometres (19 miles). 4,286 meters (14,061 ft). One full day starting just outside Thimphu, where the city falls away almost immediately, and the mountains take over completely. The trail takes you past ancient monasteries clinging to cliff faces, through meadows carpeted in purple rhododendrons, across ridgelines where prayer flags disappear into low cloud. In this video, we follow the full trail in a single day, from the misty forest paths of Motithang all the way to the dark, still waters of Dungtsho Lake. The hike begins beneath rocky cliff faces draped in moss, the path narrow and lined with wildflowers. The air is cool, and the silence is immediate. The trail passes by Phajoding Monastery on the way up, before climbing higher into the open highland. Your legs find their rhythm. Your mind starts to settle. Above the treeline, everything changes. Purple rhododendrons open up in every direction. Small alpine ponds catch the grey sky. Your legs are working hard. Your mind has gone completely quiet. The higher you climb, the more the world falls away behind you. And then the valley walls close in, and there is Dungtsho Lake. Dark water. Steep rock on all sides. Prayer flags along the shore. Still in a way that feels deliberate. You stand there longer than you planned. The return via the Pumola route covers 9 kilometres (6 miles) of rolling highland. Prayer flags mark the ridgeline, snapping hard in the wind. When the clouds finally break, the panorama stretches far beyond what the camera can hold. Bhutan does this to you. It slows you down until you finally start to see.
