Meri Puensum Nature Trail - Hiking Through Bhutan's Sacred Forest
📍 Trail Info: ● Distance: 19 km (12 miles) ● Max altitude: 3,800 m (12,467 ft) ● Duration: 7–8 hours ● Starting Point: Dumcho village ● Ending Point: Suspension bridge, Haa Town Some trails take you from point A to point B. This one takes you somewhere deeper. The Meri Puensum Nature Trail in Haa valley, Bhutan, is a full forest immersion. Winding through 563 hectares of ancient heritage forest established in 2016, the trail carries you beneath towering canopies, past moss-draped giants, and into a silence that feels almost sacred. This is the kind of forest that slows your breathing before you even realize it. We began at Dumcho village, just a 10-minute drive from the center of Haa Town. Before stepping onto the trail, we lit incense at Lhakang Karpo - a quiet ritual that sets the intention for the journey ahead. From that first step into the trees, the outside world simply fades away. The forest here is ancient and alive. Towering firs and pines stretch upward, their roots gripping mossy earth. The air is cool and thick with the scent of pine and wet soil. Ferns cling to the bark of century-old trees. Streams carve their way through the undergrowth. Three canopy rest stops mark the trail, each one an invitation to pause, breathe, and simply be present in the forest. This is what the Japanese call Shinrin-yoku, “forest bathing”. The practice of letting nature enter through your senses, slowing the mind and restoring the body. But Bhutan doesn't need a name for it. Here, walking among trees with reverence and gratitude isn't a wellness trend. It's simply a way of life, woven into the culture and the landscape alike. The trail climbs steadily over the course of 4-5 hours, ascending to a maximum altitude of 3,800 meters (12,467 ft). The climb is gradual enough to be manageable, yet demanding enough to keep you honest. As the trees thin near the summit, the forest opens up to reveal something truly breathtaking, sweeping panoramic views of Mount Jomolhari and Chelela Pass stretching wide across the horizon. After hours of walking beneath a canopy, stepping into that open sky feels like surfacing for air. The reward feels earned, and it feels immense. From there, the trail descends gently back through the forest, finishing at the suspension bridge near Haa Town - 19 kilometers (12 miles) of forest, altitude, and quiet wonder behind you. You'll come out the other side a little quieter, a little lighter, and very glad you came. If you're looking for a trail that challenges the body while stilling the mind, Meri Puensum Nature Trail is it. #Bhutanhiking #Haavalley #MeriPuensumNatureTrail #BhutanPelyabTours
