The Origin Myth:The 12-Year Drought The festival's origins trace back to the Licchavi period(specifically during the reign of King Narendra Deva,640–683 AD).According to local folklore,the Kathmandu Valley was struck by a devastating,relentless drought that lasted for 12 years.Rivers dried up,crops withered&the people faced mass starvation.The crisis wasn't a natural disaster;it was caused by Guru Gorakhnath(a powerful,ancient yogic saint).Gorakhnath had visited Patan,but the local citizens failed to recognize him or offer him proper hospitality.Furious at this disrespect,he captured the nine Nagas(the divine serpent deities responsible for bringing rain to the valley)sat on top of them in deep meditation& refused to move.As long as the snakes were trapped beneath him,no rain could fall.To solve the crisis a historic alliance was formed between three figures representing different facets of the valley:King Narendra Deva of Bhaktapur.The State Bandhudatta Acharya a powerful Tantric priest from Kathmandu(The Spirit)Lalit Jyapu a humble farmer from Patan(The Soil)The Tantric priest realized that Gorakhnath would only rise from his seat if his own spiritual teacher,Rato Machindranath(also known as Bungadhyo or Karunamaya)appeared before him.The trio embarked on a treacherous journey to Kamaru Kamakhya(in present-day Assam,India)to invoke the deity & invite him back to the valley. When they successfully brought Rato Machindranath to the valley,Gorakhnath immediately stood up to bow&pay his respects to his master.The moment he moved,the 9 Nagas were freed. The sky turned dark& heavy monsoon rains instantly poured over the parched land,saving the valley from starvation. In eternal gratitude,King Narendra Deva established the annual chariot festival. 1Deity,Multi-Religious Harmony What makes Rato Machindranath unique is how it beautifully bridges 2major religions:For Newar Buddhists:He is worshipped as Karunamaya or Padmapani Lokeshwor,the fourth mortal Bodhisattva of absolute compassion who chose to delay his own nirvana to alleviate the suffering of humanity. For Hindus:He is revered as Matsyendranath a powerful multi-faceted yogic saint,a lord of the fishes & the premier guardian deity of rain&agricultural fertility. BhotoJatra(The Grand Finale)The festival reaches its climax at Jawalakhel with the display of the Bhoto a black,diamond&jeweled vest.According to another legend a farmer received this vest from a Naga king after curing his wife's eye ailment.It was later stolen by a Lakhe(demon)&after a dispute arose over who owned it,the vest was stored safely with the deity.Every yr a government official holds up the vest to the crowd from all four corners of the chariot,asking if anyone has the proof to claim it. Returning Home:Pyāu Bīchā Once the BhotoJatra finishes,the festival draws to an absolute end.The giant chariot is dismantled & the statue of Rato Machindranath is placed into a small wooden palanquin. This brings us back to the phrase you asked about earlier:Pyāu Bīchā.Surrounded by musicians,bajrayana priests& a massive crowd of emotional devotees,the deity is formally escorted back to his winter home in the ancient village of Bungamati.
