RICE FEEDING FESTIVAL | Ancient Newa Tradition | RATO MACHHINDRANATH Rice Feeding Ritual 2083-3-5 जा होय्गु जात्रा (Rice Feeding Festival) – जावलाखेलको नाम र परम्पराको अद्भुत कथा रातो मच्छिन्द्रनाथ (करुणामय बुंग द्यः) को विश्वप्रसिद्ध रथयात्राको अन्तिम चरण जावलाखेलमा पुगेर सम्पन्न हुन्छ। जावलाखेलको नाम नै एक प्राचीन धार्मिक परम्परासँग जोडिएको छ,जसलाई नेपाल भाषामा - जा होय्गु जात्रा (जा होल्यु जात्रा) भनिन्छ। नेपाल भाषामा: जा (Ja) = पकाएको चामल (भात) होय्गु (Hoyegu) = छर्ने वा खुवाउने कार्य ख्य/खेल (Khel) = खुला मैदान यसरी जावलाखेल को अर्थ नै "भात छर्ने वा खुवाउने मैदान" भन्ने हुन्छ। रथयात्राको अन्तिमभन्दा अघिल्लो दिन,करुणामयको रथ जावलाखेल पुगेपछि विशेष रूपमा पकाइएको भातका थुप्रा मैदानभरि छरिन्छ। यो कार्यलाई - जा होय्गु जात्रा भनिन्छ। भात छर्ने यो परम्पराले वर्षा,अन्न,समृद्धि र उर्वरताको प्रतीकात्मक आशीर्वाद सम्पूर्ण समुदाय र भूमिलाई प्रदान गर्ने विश्वास गरिन्छ। करुणामय बुंग द्यःलाई वर्षा,करुणा र अन्नका देवताको रूपमा पूजा गरिन्छ। त्यसैले भात छर्ने यो अनुष्ठानले काठमाडौं उपत्यकालाई खडेरीबाट जोगाई अन्नबाली प्रशस्त होस् भन्ने कामना व्यक्त गर्दछ। स्थानीय नेवार समुदायले यस दिन पारिवारिक भोज तथा धार्मिक कार्यक्रम गरी सामूहिक उत्सव मनाउने परम्परा पनि रहेको छ। यसरी जा होय्गु जात्रा केवल एउटा धार्मिक अनुष्ठान मात्र होइन, जावलाखेलको नाम,इतिहास,कृषि संस्कृति र करुणामयप्रतिको गहिरो श्रद्धाको जीवित प्रतीक हो। Ja Hoyegu Jatra (Rice Feeding Festival) The Sacred Tradition Behind Jawalakhel One of the most fascinating and meaningful rituals of the month-long Rato Machhindranath (Karunamaya Bung Dyaḥ) Jatra is the Ja Hoyegu Jatra,also known as the Rice Feeding Festival. This ancient Newa tradition is deeply connected to the history,culture and even the name of Jawalakhel,where the grand chariot festival reaches its climax. In the Newa language: Ja = Cooked rice Hoyegu = To scatter or feed Khel = Open field Thus,Jawalakhel is traditionally understood as the Field of Scattered Rice or the Rice Feeding Ground. On the penultimate day of the festival, after the towering chariot of Rato Machhindranath arrives at Jawalakhel,priests and designated devotees perform the sacred Ja Hoyegu ritual. Large quantities of cooked rice are ceremonially scattered across the open field as an offering and blessing for the land and its people. This ritual symbolizes the distribution of prosperity,fertility and agricultural abundance. As the revered deity of rain,compassion and harvest,Rato Machhindranath is believed to protect the Kathmandu Valley from drought and ensure plentiful crops. The scattering of rice expresses gratitude for past blessings and prayers for continued rainfall, food security, and communal well-being.
