Idealism in philosophy has little to do with what people imagine. The same as materialism. Hegel's idealist dictum "only the spiritual is real" has led us to a conception of History as the development of the Spirit, in which the Logical and the Material, the "logos" and the "flesh," are identified. From this perspective, History itself is a long reasoning that increasingly demonstrates that reason and reality are one and the same. Time itself, as it passes, reasons. Thus, for Hegel, the brain of totality ends up contrasting itself with "the brain of those who reason," to use a Bertolt Brecht phrase here. For idealism, Hegel tells us, reason is not so impotent that it can only determine the ideal, what "ought to be" as opposed to what is real and what is. Reason is, on the contrary, the power of reality. We materialists lack that confidence. We think one can be completely right and still fail. That reason can be completely powerless in the face of reality. The best proof of this is the world we live in, a world in which the UN, armed with the Declaration of Human Rights, is right, yet completely powerless in the face of NATO and the powers that be of the New World Order. However, there are those who argue that this World Order, the order of economic globalization, the order of the world market, embodies true reason, the reasons with which the brain of History, the brain of Totality, reasons. They are our current Hegelians, the true idealists of our time.
