In the previous chapter, we summarized the "unhappy conscience" as the experience of finding the absolute before us, like a sensible thing among sensible things. Instead of feeling encompassed by a totality, we are forced to pursue it, without quite knowing where. In Christianity, you finally find that totality nailed to a cross. This adventure, which is the essence of Christianity, is the very essence of love. Romero and Juliet desperately seek "to be two in one," to merge into a totality, and suddenly, they find that longed-for totality materialized before them, in the form of a son, a daughter. It is a surprising miracle, without a doubt, because the child is like an orgasm materialized in a body. But, at the same time, it is a delirious intensification of the "unhappy conscience," because the sought-after and now happily found unity, however, is right there in front of us, possessing a crazy and insane autonomy, like a child running around the hallway trying to stick his fingers in electrical outlets. Romero and Juliet can only stare at the spectacle in amazement. The sought-after unity has taken on an independent life and ignores them. Perhaps one day they will find that perfectly realized unity now nailed to a cross, "crucified with pills," as the lyrics of Extremoduro's song, "Jesucrito García," say. However, Catholic Hegelians, like Diego Fusaro, have sought to see in the "ethics of family life" the resolution of all the unhappiness of love. But this is not so: we are a poorly made Jesus Christ, we love "made into a Christ," but the Holy Spirit never arrives to complete the desired totality and resolve the problem with a happy ending. The wholeness sought by Romeo and Juliet when making love is materialized in a third party, in a son or daughter. But what is announced there is by no means the "ethical unity of the family" as Diego Fusaro claims Hegel says. What is announced there is the unhappy conscience squared. Because the only way to consummate what was sought there is radically prohibited by the prohibition of incest. That Romeo, Juliet, and their son are the same person. That is by no means the ethical unity of the family. It is the psychiatric structure of psychotic delirium: "being your own father with your mother" or "being your own son with your lover."
