For an entire day, Norman will once again live exclusively on what nature provides. The rules remain absolutely strict: no store-bought food, not even salt or oil, is allowed. 100 percent pure, natural food and self-sufficiency straight from the forest. Despite a few thunderstorms, we're still deep in the midst of a summer drought. We therefore set out expecting to find virtually no mushrooms. However, since midsummer is known as the season for wild fruits, we had high hopes for them. And indeed, we weren't disappointed: we were able to collect plenty of fresh wild blueberries and raspberries. Our search area also yielded abundant elderberry. While it's actually poisonous when raw, it can be made non-toxic and edible through proper preparation. Norman dared to try this experiment and incorporated it into his menu. ... This time, we also harvested some energy-rich seeds from nettles and broadleaf plantain, which provided us with much-needed calories in the form of protein and fat. Our absolute surprise finds, however, were a mushroom—a scaly sawgill—and the pods of bird vetch. The latter can be prepared wonderfully like sugar snap peas and were a brilliant addition. Overall, despite the ongoing heat and drought, it was an incredibly successful foraging trip. This is all the more remarkable since we only searched a very small area this time.
